Gigi Testa – World Peace Music, NEUHM intw.

1. WHY AND WHEN DID YOU START TO DJ AND TO PRODUCE MUSIC?

I started to dj in 2000 at one of my friends house spinning my father’s records, from Earth Wind and Fire to Pink Floyd and Santana, but I have been a music collector and audiophile lover since I was a kid. I liked to build my own sound system fixing amplifier speakers etc., listening more and more to my favorite music.
So basically I started to mix music with cassettes using two technics pre-recorded tape in my bedroom and I still have it!! I started to produce music after 10 years djing, listening to every kind of music in the most deep way possible.
Music production always comes from music influences to me, so it was definitely a natural process. I was constantly inspired by worldwide rhythms that pushed me a lot to create my own sound and I’m still working on it everyday.

2. WHERE DO YOU CONTINUALLY GET YOUR INSPIRATION?

I usually get my inspiration naturally, living my life paying attention on the energy I can feel all around us. It’s a natural process, so I just wake up everyday having all my senses extremely open.
About music inspiration it’s basically the same thing, I listen to music every day in every moment.
There’s too much music in this world from the past, till today and I don’t really like to categorize any music genre. Sometimes it’s not easy to search for music that can really touch your heart and soul, so I listen to African music, latin, soul, jazz, brazilian to house, funk, electronic music or techno.
As a dj I can tell you I was inspired a lot by labels like Spiritual Life Music and Ibadan Records, just not ordinary “house music”.

3. TALK ABOUT YOUR LABEL “WORLD PEACE MUSIC” ..

World Peace Music comes from the concept of world music, namely a deep spiritual approach to music, without any restriction or categories.
It involves an absolute opening, both mental and physical, towards all categories, from past to present.
WPM’s main purpose is to connect both music and culture from all around the world in one universal language, both of them have always influenced my life over the years.

4. WHICH ARTISTS ARE YOU CURRENTLY LISTENING TO?

Uff.. this is hard to say, there’s too much music: first names that come up to my mind are Kamasi Washington, Bugge’n’friends, James Manson, Seun Kuti..

5. DJS?

I’m following Trinidadian Deep, he’s producing great Music, Fred P as well and of course my good friend Volcov.

6. TELL US ABOUT NAPOLI AND ITALIAN HOUSE MUSIC SCENE.

Well, Napoli has a long history of music contaminations, because of its multiethnic culture people here have a natural approach for good quality music, all kind of music.
So everytime I have the pleasure to play there, the energy is always on top and I feel free to play all the music I like, doin’ my music journey.
About italian house music scene; I can’t tell you so much, cause I still don’t see a proper consistant movement growing up.
Except for other 2-3 great realities doing very good things, but Italy needs more for sure.

7. ENLIGHTEN US ON YOUR DREAM PROJECT?

More than a dream project, I like to call it a mission. One day, I want to produce an album based on all the music genre that inspired my life.

8. LEVAN, KNUCKLES, HARDY ..

I didn’t have the luck to live during that era, I studied and learned a lot about Paradise Garage and Larry Levan, especially as I used to live in New York City.
Larry was definitely the biggest inspiration to me, I have many of his live sets, not only from Paradise Garage, he was like the Jimi Hendrix of Dance Music.
Anyway David Mancuso was the creator, he was the big a BIG SHAMAN, if we can talk today about music journey, or 360° music, is because of him.
He just passed away, but he will continue his journey inspiring other presences more bigger than us.
